Description

Manages the design, implementation, coordination and evaluation of the Trauma Injury Prevention Program which includes public education and outreach.  Markets all components of injury prevention to members of the community including youth program.  Ensures that the program complies with the requirements of the American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center designation.

Job Responsibilities

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Interacts internally with the Trauma Program staff, physicians, patients, Hospital and University officials.

Interacts externally with the general public, local and federal government agencies.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Develops and maintains an Injury Prevention Center and database.

Develops injury prevention projects for internal and external customers.

Establishes collaborative relationships with community organizations with interests in injury prevention.

Delivers injury prevention programs through a variety of formats including lectures, health fairs and literature hand-outs.

Evaluates the outcomes of all outreach activities.

Conducts research relating to trauma prevention and incorporates the findings into the Center accordingly.

Represents the Center and Howard University Hospital at designated health fairs as well as at regional and national injury prevention conferences.

Assists in the Trauma Service Quality Improvement Program.

Participates in continuing education programs concerning trauma to maintain own skills and knowledge base.

Responsible for grant writing to obtain funding for injury prevention outreach activities.

Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.  The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.

Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.

Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.

Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.

Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.

Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

Job Requirements

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Possesses excellent training, presentation, marketing, cooperative, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Possesses creative abilities in the design, implementation and evaluation of trauma awareness and injury prevention programs.

Knowledge of E-codes, ICD-9 codes, ISS and GCS scoring.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications and Windows-based programs.

Ability to develop and maintain an Injury Prevention Center and database.

Ability to establish collaborative relationships with community organizations with interests in injury prevention and maintain a network.

Ability to design and conduct research studies relating to injury prevention.

Ability to write grant funding applications.

Ability to be flexible, creative and work independently.

Possesses high-level problem solving abilities.

Ability to attend morning pass-on rounds.

Ability to learn and perform interventions relating to substance abuse (i.e. SBIRT).

Willingness to perform bedside teaching.

Competence in both oral and written English.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in nursing, public health or related science required.  MPH preferred.

Five (5) years of comprehensive experience / knowledge of the field of injury prevention.

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (12-25lbs), stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, type, file, speak, hear, see (depth perception, color vision), calculate, compare, edit, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
