Supports appropriate, cost effective, high-quality patient care of trauma patients by coordinating care of trauma patient with staff, ancillary departments and physicians. Serves as a clinical resource for nursing staff to answer questions and provide guidance related to the clinical care of the trauma patient. Serve as a liaison between physician groups/specialties to coordinate patient care. Assures quality patient care is delivered following the standards of care/pathways. Responds to the Emergency Department as available for Trauma activations. Provides education and support for patients and families. Coordinates and assists with community outreach via the trauma education/injury prevention programs. Assists in the identification of patient, staff and EMS educational needs and creates and implements educational opportunities. Actively participates in local, regional, and national nursing/trauma professional organizations. Identifies opportunities for improvement through concurrent patient rounds, multidisciplinary patient rounds, and discussions with patients and families. Regularly participates in Trauma Care Committee and Trauma QI Committee. Assists in monitoring customer service to improve customer satisfaction. Maintains current knowledge and competency in trauma nursing practice and education relating to quality/performance improvement. Facilitates participation in performance improvement 10 CEU’s/contact hours required in trauma/critical care each year.
Bachelors Nursing (BSN) required
Five years emergency department or critical care experience preferred
Trauma experience preferred
Certification & Licensures
Current RN licensure by the Virginia Board of Nursing required
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required, or obtain within 18 months of hire
Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) highly recommended
ATLS, PALS highly recommended
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required *
