Consistent with the mission, philosophy, and policies of Loyola University Health System, the Trauma Outreach Coordinator, reporting to the Trauma Program Manager and collaborating with the Trauma Medical Director, will facilitate, organize and implement community outreach and injury prevention activities. This position will also track, coordinate and implement trauma education to meet the needs of clinical staff across multiple disciplines to support compliance with IDPH and ACS-COT Standards of Care for Level 1 Trauma Centers.

Job Responsibilities

Community Outreach: To meet the goal of improving community health related to traumatic injury, coordinates with Loyola staff and members of community organizations to identify opportunities to provide education and interventions for trauma prevention.  The Community Outreach Coordinator will perform the following duties:

  • Prioritize prevention activities according to injury trends identified by the Trauma Registry
  • Identify opportunities for engagement of the interdisciplinary trauma team with clinical and nonclinical entities that are concerned with trauma prevention
  • Evaluate outcomes of prevention activities
  • Make recommendations to trauma program leadership and community outreach organizations for prevention activities based on knowledge of evidence based practices and available resources for trauma prevention
  • Facilitate access between trauma experts and community resources to develop and support prevention efforts
  • Designs, implements and evaluates comprehensive injury prevention programs for the community, pre-hospital, medical center and region.Education:  Trauma education reflects the needs of trauma patients across the lifespan and the needs of clinical staff across multiple disciplines.  In collaboration with TMD and TPM, trauma education coordinator will coordinate with leadership from ED, EMS, GME, and CPPD to achieve trauma education for clinical staff as required by IDPH and ACS-COT Standards for Care expected for a Level 1 Trauma Center.
  •  Clinical professionals include medical, nursing, pre-hospital, interdisciplinary providers and support personnel
  • Track and support compliance with IDPH and ACS-COT Standards of Care for Level 1 Trauma Centers
  • Coordinate specific institution, state and national courses for the medical center, region, and surrounding area.  Trauma specific education includes TNCC, TCAR, ATLS, TNS, ATOM, ASSET and other education as identified by trauma department leadership
  • Identify education needs and objectives, plans and implements education programs, and evaluates outcomes of programs
  • Make recommendations for education based on needs assessments and evaluations
  • In collaboration with TMD, Executive Director, TPM and QI Coordinator, develops and executes education plans as indicated by PIPS
  • Develop creative learning opportunities to attract interest in trauma care, e.g. journal club, visiting speakers, posters, conferences, electronic-based educationFunctions as a liaison between the trauma center, other medical departments, referring hospital and referring physicians.  Is the lead person from the trauma program who oversees alcohol screening and brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT)

    Other - General:

  • Participate in PIPS program to identify needs and opportunities for education and prevention activities
  • Generate reports and maintain record of trauma related education and outreach activities
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of trauma care, trauma related education, and traumatic injury prevention
  • Maintain record of shared education hours with other trauma centers within the region for equitable sharing of resources
  • Prepares various reports that concern operation issues, care provided, finances and opportunities related the Trauma Outreach activities

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred Masters Degree or equivalent training acquired work experience or education
  • Specific Degree (s): BSN, BS, MSN, MPH, MSW, or health related field

    Minimum Experience

  • Required: 1-2 years of previous job-related experience
  • Preferred: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience
  • Details: Knowledge, implementation and evaluation of Outreach and Injury Prevention Programs and education programs


  • Required: Current Registered Nurse License State of Illinois
  • Preferred: Trauma Nurse Specialist
  • Licensed EMT Paramedic State of Illinois
  • Other: Driver's license required.  Preferred: TNS, PHTLS, TNCC-Instructor, CEN, CCEMT-P, TCRN, ACLS, PALS

    Computer Skills:

  • Required: Access, Basic keyboarding skills, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Word
  • Preferred: Digital Innovations Trauma Registry Software experience
