Description

Primarily responsible for maintaining the Trauma Registry. This involves concurrent collection, abstraction and data entry of information from the trauma customer's medical record to the Trauma Registry database. In addition, the incumbent develops reports/queries for purposes of trauma performance improvement, trauma research, education and other requirements needed for Level I Trauma Center verification

Job Responsibilities

Trauma Registry:
• Performs concurrent chart abstraction, coding and scoring for the registry.
• Maintains daily admission log.
• Coordinates data for Performance Improvement (PI) for various departments.
• Initiates the trauma improvement process (PI) from the registry or as directed by the Trauma Program Manager.
• Develops reports/queries from the trauma registry as requested.
• Maintains autopsy information for the registry from Medical Examiner and ensures information is available for mortality review.
• Runs standard reports for monthly PI activities.
• Develops and distributes monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
• Validates data to ensure the integrity of the registry.
• Responsible for reporting data to the Minnesota Department of Health for the Minnesota Trauma Data Bank, the National Trauma Data Bank, and Trauma Quality Improvement Program.
• Actively participates in the MN Trauma Registry Alliance; Acts as a liaison for North Memorial Medical Center related to the MN Trauma Registry Alliance.
Trauma Research
• Assists with providing information from the trauma registry as requested by the trauma research committee
• Member of the Trauma Research Committee.
Trauma Center Verification
• Assists with achieving and maintaining standards for trauma center verification as assigned by the Trauma Program Manager
• Monitors state and national trends for Trauma Registry and makes recommendations accordingly.
• Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.

Job Requirements

Education

• Associate degree in Health Information.
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Minimum one year work experience as a registrar in other registries or other trauma registries preferred.
• Experience or education in Information Technology beneficial.
• Experience with registry or medical databases beneficial.
• Experience with electronic medical records (EPIC) preferred.
• Computer skills necessary to do data abstraction and reporting in Word and Excel, Data entry.
• Ability to write queries for abstracting information from a database preferred. (Cognos, Crystal, Clarity).
• Ability to work autonomously, with attention to detail.
• Strong communication and self-motivation skills necessary.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology necessary.
• Effective communication skills necessary.
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding, and AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preferred.
• Knowledge of AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale) and ISS (Injury Severity Score) beneficial

Licensure/Certification(s) Preferred

• Coding certification from either AAPC or AHIMA as a coding professional, basic or specialty certification; or RHIT or RHIA - NMH Preferred
