The Trauma Registrar manages all components of the Trauma Registry, including data collection, data entry, and data retrieval/statistical conversion.

Job Responsibilities

  • Reviews trauma admission records for data collection and abstraction.
  • Analyzes all records for quality assurance trauma standards recommended by governing bodies and as stipulated by regulatory groups.
  • Performs the abstraction, coding (ICD) and application of all trauma data points in the registry taken primarily from inpatient trauma cases.
  • Apprises program coordinator of all relevant trauma audit filter inconsistencies via periodic quality assurance reports. Produces various other quality assurance reports as directed.
  • Ensures that data required for State and National reporting is abstracted and sent in a timely manner to meet required timelines.
  • Participates in relevant state and national meetings and is a member of appropriate organizations, to include: Michigan Trauma Coalition and Trauma Registrar Committee to meet recommendations and educational requirements set by American College of Surgeons (ACS).
  • Responsible for the assimilation, extraction, and statistical presentation of all trauma registry data, as required by the ACS and NTDB and requested by the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
  • Collaborates with the Trauma Program Manager in the conversion of ICD codes to trauma scoring systems and serves as a liaison with the Trauma Program Manager to ensure accuracy of the registry data.

Job Requirements


  • Preferred Credential(s):
    • Registered Health Information Administrator or eligible or Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT) preferred.


  • Associate's degree in Health Information Management or Coding required or graduate of an accredited school of Accredited Record Technology required, or completion of a correspondence course of medical records personnel conducted by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) required

Work Experience:

  • Coding, medical terminology, and medical record abstraction experience preferred. Previous experience with trauma registry data entry preferred. Previous experience in ACS Level I or Level II Trauma Program preferred.
